Answers

  1. Which time period are you doing first?

My first project was Classical House of Learning Literature: The Modern Age because that is what we did for the 2009 - 2010 school year.  You can view samples by clicking the button at the top of the page.

  1. Which time period are you doing next?

I'm currently working on Logic Stage for Ancients.  Once I'm finished with that I will work on The Middle Ages and Early Modern Times.

  1. Which time periods are finished?

Grammar Stage for The Modern Age and Ancient Times are finished!  You can buy them at Lulu.com in print or eBook format.  Logic Stage for Ancient Times is partway done.  The first seven lessons are available for purchase at Lulu.com.

  1. When will other time periods be ready?

My intention is for Middle Ages to be ready for the 2011 - 2012 school year.  I am currently working on Logic Stage for Ancients because my oldest will be in 5th grade during the 2010 - 2011 school year and I want to make sure she has what she needs.  Check my blog for production news updates.

  1. How much does it cost?

This is a big project.  I do, however, feel strongly about making sure Classical House of Learning Literature is a feasible option.  I have priced it reasonably.  Classical House of Learning Literature: The Modern Age is available as four, 9-week eBook units at a price of $9.95 each or one eBook that contains ALL of the lessons (teacher and both levels of student pages) for $29.95.  All eBooks are on sale for a reduced price at Lulu.com!

  1. In what format will Classical House of Learning Literature be sold?

Classical House of Learning Literature can purchased in eBook or print format through Lulu.com.

  1. Is it secular?

Classical House of Learning Literature is secular, even though I am a (fairly liberal) Christian.  Because there are too many variations in spiritual beliefs for one program to suit everybody and because I find it extremely frustrating to adapt religious programs to suit our own beliefs, I did my best to keep Classical House of Learning Literature neutral on issues of spirituality and religion.  Rest assured that I have no hidden agenda to indoctrinate your children. ;-)  Keep in mind, however, that many classic works of literature contain Christian characters and/or themes.  I teach my kids evolution and an old earth, if that means anything to you.

  1. Does Classical House of Learning Literature include writing?

It includes instructions for narrations and book summaries, but it is not intended to be a writing program.  Early versions did have a writing component, but I feel it's best to keep those separate for now as it really slowed down how quickly I could complete the program.

  1. Does Classical House of Learning Literature include literary analysis?

Grammar Stage does not, but Logic Stage does.  Early versions of Classical House of Learning Literature for Grammar Stage included breaking a story down in to elements on a story chart as well as lessons about specific literary terms or devices used in the stories being studied, but upon further research and my own experiences with my kids I've decided that it's best to leave those things for Logic and Rhetoric level students.

  1. What levels and time periods are currently available?

Grammar Stage for The Modern Age and Ancient Times are finished!  You can buy them at Lulu.com in print or eBook format.

  1. Classical House of Learning Literature is like....

My idea was to make this program similar to the activity guides for The Story of the World by Susan Wise Bauer, which is the history program our family uses.  Each lesson includes a biography of the author, reading assignments, vocabulary lists, review questions, narration examples, summary assignments for books, copywork, and activity ideas.

  2. Do I need the Teacher Pages book? or Do I need the Student Pages books?

You can use the program using only the Teacher Pages book.  However, if you want an older student to work independently, you will also need to purchase either the Level 2 Student Pages book or eBook.  The Level 1 Student Pages book or eBook contain narration and copywork pages only and are optional.

The eBooks labeled TEACHER & STUDENT PAGES contain everything (Teacher Pages and both levels of Student Pages).

The print books labeled TEACHER PAGES contain only the Teacher Pages.

The print books and eBooks labeled STUDENT PAGES contain only the Student Pages.

Level 1:  ONLY contains narration and copywork pages for Level 1 Grammar Stage students. Everything else is found in the separate (required) Teacher Pages. This file is intended for those who purchased the PRINT TEACHER PAGES book and therefore need the Student Pages.

Level 2:  Included are review questions (NO ANSWERS), narration pages, book summary exercises (NO ANSWERS), author biographies, vocabulary lists, copywork pages, memorization pages, and additional activity ideas. The 27 lessons (36+ weeks of material) are correlated to chapters from The Story of the World history program by Susan Wise Bauer. This literature guide is the perfect complement to your modern era history studies! NOTE: The Teacher Pages are sold as a separate book and contain answers to the review questions as well as sample narrations and book summaries. The Teacher Pages include book and materials lists as well. This file is intended for those who purchased the PRINT TEACHER PAGES book and therefore need the Student Pages.
