Lesson 10: Seven Daughters and Seven Sons by Barbara Cohen and Bahija Lovejoy

Content Warning:  This story is about a woman who pretends to be a man.  It mentions sexuality when it talks about royalty using slave girls for pleasure, sharing a bed with a person of the opposite sex, losing maidenhood to an unscrupulous employer, wanting and having a man, etc.  There is nothing explicit (no sex scenes), but sexual activity and desires are implied (i.e. there is sexual tension).  There is also a scene (pp. 150 – 151) during which the main character contemplates her masked femininity by disrobing (alone) and looking at her breasts and pubic hair.  If any of this makes you (the parent) uncomfortable, I strongly suggest you censor this book while you read it aloud or pre-read this book and decide whether or not to let your child read it alone.
